The Research Group Clinical Spectroscopic Diagnostics investigates and develops novel spectroscopic tools and methods for medical diagnostics and the characterization of physiological interactions with a special focus on infection and sepsis. Optical-spectroscopic methods are designed and applied to characterize the pathogen, elucidate its interaction with drugs and with the host as well as to reveal the host response. Marker-free, non-destructive photonic methods are incorporated into bioanalytical chip systems with the aim to shorten time to diagnose directly from the patient’s sample, as well as to gain new insights into the pathogenesis of infection and inflammatory processes. 

Projects are conducted in cooperation with the Center for Sepsis Control and Care, an integrated research and treatment center at the Jena University Hospital, and are targeted at the translation of multiscale spectroscopy to the medical need.

Research Topics

Synergies between the technological-spectroscopic expertise and powerful key enabling technologies established and available at Leibniz-IPHT as well as the close proximity to the clinical samples are utilized to perform biomedical imaging and spectroscopic characterization of physiological interactions during infection on multiple scales:

  • Research of novel optical-spectroscopic approaches to characterize drug-pathogen interactions (antibiotic susceptibility) as well as pathogen-host interactions,
  • Development of spectroscopic methods to characterize the host response during infection and other diseases, 
  • Elucidation of pathogenesis mechanisms during difficult-to-treat infections using Raman, IR and fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopic techniques.

Addressed Application Fields 

The new biophotonic methods open new ways for the marker-free and non-destructive characterization of biological and functional molecules, particles, cells and tissue which can be implemented into novel optical-spectroscopy based diagnostic tools and methods as well as research tools to study and elucidate disease and pathogenicity mechanisms.

  • Identification of pathogens and their resistance pattern directly from patients sample for early therapeutic decision
  • Spectroscopic hemogram revealing activation states of leukocytes directly from peripheral blood
  • Gain new insights into pathogenesis mechanisms using biophotonic characterization of cells and tissue.
