Science and Research live on international Exchange

The internationalisation of Leibniz IPHT is a central focus for the Institute’s overall direction and plans for development. The Leibniz IPHT internationalisation strategy is a cross-functional task which all units and staff at the Institute will work on and participate in together.

Leibniz IPHT continually expands their technological and scientific expertise by using complementary skills in international collaborations. This will result in the creation of synergies which will further enhance research performance at Leibniz IPHT in order to consolidate the Institute’s leading position in its core areas of “biophotonics” and “optical health technologies”. This is based on strategic and official partnerships with selected prestigious institutions and as part of internationally funded research projects (e.g. EU projects, international DFG Graduate Schools etc.). For this reason, in 2018, Leibniz IPHT entered into the “Jena-Davis-Alliance of Excellence in Biophotonics (JEDIS)” with the University of California, Davis, USA, an alliance funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, for cooperation in research, education and the creation of synergies in the area of biophotonics.

In addition to its research, Leibniz IPHT also internationalises its scientific training to enable doctoral and post-doctoral students to gain international experience, acquire inter-cultural skills and learn core values such as tolerance, responsibility, solidarity, cultural diversity and freedom of expression.

Leibniz IPHT actively invites excellent guest researchers from abroad. In terms of infrastructure, Leibniz IPHT provides fantastic opportunities for visiting scientists as part of short-term stays or sabbaticals. Leibniz IPHT participates in the scheme for guest professors run by the Abbe Center of Photonics(ACP). This exchange provides great opportunity to bring new perspectives to the day-to-day research at Leibniz IPHT as well as to establish and maintain long-term research collaborations.

The Leibniz IPHT enjoys great international popularity. Numerous scientists and students from all over the world come to and work at our institute. Tolerance, responsibility, solidarity, cultural diversity and open-minded atmosphere are requirements for an international environment. With a living welcome culture we want to facilitate a pleasant start for guests and new colleagues at Leibniz IPHT. Welcome guides help “newbies” to get along and support them in finding apartments or visiting public authorities.
