With their terahertz (THz) camera, researchers at the Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) in Jena, Germany, have developed an alternative to the controversially discussed “nude scanners.” The camera, which works passively, detects the heat radiation in the THz band emitted by the human body and converts it into images at high frame rates. For this outstanding and highly innovative development the researchers of the department for quantum detection won the Thuringia Research Award 2009.
