Dr. Karina Weber took up her position as Administrative Director at the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology at the beginning of 2024. After more than a decade in leading positions at the institute, she is now responsible for the administrative and commercial areas at Leibniz IPHT as a member of the Executive Board. Together with the scientific director Prof. Dr. Jürgen Popp, she forms the managing board for the institute. She takes over this role from Frank Sondermann, who has been retiring at the end of 2023 after more than 30 years as Administrative Director.

Karina Weber has held various positions at Leibniz IPHT since 2007. As a Board Officer and Deputy Head of the Spectroscopy/Imaging Research Department since 2019, she has gained extensive experience in the successful coordination of scientific and administrative processes.

Her career at Leibniz IPHT includes key positions such as head of the Jena Biochip Initiative working group and coordination of the Leibniz Research Alliance “Medical Technology: Diagnosis, Monitoring and Therapy”. After completing her doctorate in medical technology at the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences (EAH) in 2006, Karina Weber worked as a research assistant at the EAH and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena on the development of sensor- and chip-based methods for point-of-care applications in spectroscopy.

“I am very much looking forward to taking on the administrative responsibility at Leibniz IPHT,” says Karina Weber. “The opportunity to work closely with our dedicated and well-established teams in the administration and to always be able to understand the scientific perspective excites me in particular and I am looking forward to the joint tasks and successes that lie ahead.”
