Institute strengthens AI research and restructures research units
Research groups become departments: From August 2019, the research groups “Clinical-Spectroscopic Diagnostics” headed by Ute Neugebauer, “Nanooptics” headed by Jer-Shing Huang and “Magnetometry” headed by Ronny Stolz will become research departments. A new research department will be added: under the title “Photonic Data Science”, Leibniz IPHT will increasingly focus on researching AI technologies.
With the new research department “Photonic Data Science”, which will be headed by Thomas Bocklitz, research into artificial intelligence and learning systems will play an even greater role in the profile of Leibniz IPHT in the future. AI technologies form the basis for numerous rapid diagnostic procedures in the field of optical health technologies. So from August there will be 15 research departments at Leibniz-IPHT.
Since June 2019, the institute has been bundling key technologies in and around the clean room in the new Competence Center for Micro- and Nanotechnologies. In order to interlink working areas and processes more closely, center head Uwe Huebner coordinates three working groups under the umbrella of the center: the working group “Microsystems and Nanotechnology”, which Uwe Huebner heads himself, the working group “IR Sensor Production”, being headed by Kay Dietrich, and the working group “Microstructure Analysis”, being headed by Jan Dellith. In a key area of Leibniz IPHT, processes will become more efficient and flexible and the working groups can exploit synergies in an better way. “The scientific success of our institute is based, among other things, on the technological possibilities of micro and nanotechnology,” says Director Jürgen Popp. “With the new competence center, we are excellently positioned for the future”.
