New Infrastructure for Multispectral and Intelligent Optical Diagnostics
Laser4IPHT: Expansion of the Laser Infrastructure at Leibniz IPHT for Next-Generation IR Microscopy

The project aims to strategically expand the infrared laser infrastructure at Leibniz IPHT in order to develop multispectral and intelligent imaging and diagnostic methods as key local technologies. The new infrastructure creates the technological basis for advanced optical techniques and strengthens their long-term establishment in research at the institute.
At the core of the project are investments in highly specialized infrared and visible laser systems with the highest repetition rates and exceptional stability, complemented by precise nanopositioning systems and a comprehensive range of modern adaptive optics. These components form the foundation for two central infrastructure modules: an optical-photothermal infrared microscope and an optically intelligent near-infrared image recognition system.
Within the subproject VINIR, the focus is on developing and using this infrastructure for novel imaging and data-processing approaches in medical diagnostics. The goal is to recognize and characterize complex patterns in cells and tissues in real time—energy-efficiently, with high precision, and entirely optically. The planned setups open up new possibilities for intelligent analysis methods directly at the optical level.
The funding strengthens key core competencies of Leibniz IPHT in three areas: integrated photonics, in particular the characterization and optimization of in-house highly nonlinear waveguides; neuromorphic, neuron-inspired computing with optical signals, based on a patented fundamental principle; and intelligent biomedical diagnostics, by enabling optical AI approaches to be used directly for the analysis of blood cells and other samples.
The project is supported by the Free State of Thuringia under funding reference number 2024 FGI 0026 and co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
