Through the establishment of the Leibniz ScienceCampi on the part of the Leibniz Association, a complementary, thematically focused cooperation of Leibniz institutes with universities is promoted. This is a core concern and unique selling point of the Leibniz Association with the aim of creating interdisciplinary networks to further develop both the respective research area and the location and to strengthen the scientific environment for this topic.

The LSC InfectoOptics is a collaborative project funded by the Leibniz Association and coordinated at the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology - Hans Knöll Institute (HKI) in Jena.

In the LSC InfectoOptics, Jena infection biologists and physicists have joined forces to combine their expertise to gain a deeper understanding of infection processes and develop new diagnostic methods.

On the one hand, physicists and engineers make it possible to research and treat infections with state-of-the-art technologies in optics and photonics. Methods such as flow cytometry, in which cells are examined and sorted using fluorescence, but also the combination of microfluidics with other spectroscopic approaches have enormous potential for the rapid analysis of cells, for example in the blood of infected individuals. On the other hand, natural product researchers and infection biologists are working to elucidate molecular mechanisms in infections and to develop new agents that prevent infections. In joint research projects, the knowledge and methodological spectra of the different scientific fields are brought together, knowledge processes are accelerated and new subject areas are opened up.

The project is funded by the Leibniz competition under the number W8/2018 (HKI).
