The Leibniz Institute of Photonics Technology (IPHT) offers the following position (100%) in the Working Group Ultrafast Spectroscopy of the Department Functional Interfaces from 1 July 2019 Doctoral Researcher (f/m) in the field of Optical Spectroscopy/ Microscopy/ Photonics. Funding of the position is limited to 3 years.

“Transient absorption microscopy of a lab-on-a-vesicle in vitro and ex-vivo”
We are pleased to advertise an Early-Stage Researcher (PhD) position, as part of the EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) “Logic Lab”. The Logic Lab projects aims to develop a new concept for molecular logic sensors for application in intracellular diagnostics. Expertise in the field of classical molecular logic gates will be combined with state-of-the-art research approaches in synthetic, supramolecular and theoretical chemistry, spectroscopy as well as microfluidics and cell biology to establish new tools for biomedical research.

Candidates with a background in physics, (bio)chemistry, photonics or optical engineering are invited to apply for this PhD position.

The aim of the doctoral project is to study of molecular logic gates and their supramolecular assemblies (lab-on-a-vesicle) in endothelial cells using time-resolved (micro)spectroscopic methods, i.e. transient absorption microscopy. The candidate will investigate spatially resolved photophysics of the molecular sensors and lab-on-a-vesicle in endothelial cells and ex-vivo arteries of small animals and thus elucidate the role of different local environments on the photophysics and the resultant optical properties. During the project he/she will gain first spectroscopic insights into the excited-state processes of isolated and vesicle-integrated molecular chromophores when embedded into a biological environment. The photophysical properties immediately after uptake of the vesicles into the cells / the tissue will be characterised using time-lapse experiments.
Scientific training in partner institutions include fluorescence (lifetime) microscopy in cells to correlate the results to the transient absorption microscopic data during a 2 month secondment at Dublin City University (Ireland), label-free characterisation of artery tissue from atherosclerotic mouse models using Raman-imaging during a 1 month secondment at Jagiellonian University Krakow (Poland), spectroscopic investigation of the (supra)molecular sensors in artery-on-a-chip systems during a 2 month secondment at the company Mimetas (The Netherlands) as well as in endothelial/microglia cell co-cultures during a 1 month secondment at the Centre of Experimental Medicine of Slovak Academy of Science (Slovakia).

The candidate must have a Master/Engineering degree in Physics, (Bio)Chemistry or Optical Engineering, preferably with majors in Spectroscopy. The candidate should have good knowledge and interest in both experimental and theoretical work. Interest in the field of photochemistry, photophysics and time-resolved optical spectroscopy is required. Knowledge in the field of (bio)chemical sensing, cell biology and a track record in scientific publications are great assets. Fluent communication skills in English, both spoken and written are required.

Candidates will be required to meet the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher eligibility criteria: ( In particular, at the time of appointment candidates must have had less than four years full-time equivalent research experience and must not have already obtained a PhD. Additionally, they must not have resided in Germany for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the appointment.
