Not only are modern fibers important components in telecommunication, they also find increased use in medical technologies, especially minimal invasive applications. At the Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) in Jena, Germany, researchers developed methods for the production of particularly thin optical fibers with efficient light guiding properties. The idea is to use such fibers inside an endoscope in the screening of esophageal cancer.
