Highly efficient higher-order modes filtering into aperiodic very large mode area fibers for single-mode propagation
in: Optics Letters (2014)
We report here the first experimental demonstration of a new generation of very large mode area optical fibers based on an original inner cladding microstructuration intending to strengthen the singlemode propagation. The inner cladding relies on an aperiodic all-solid structure exacerbating the spatial rejection of higher-order-modes while preserving significant confinement of the fundamental mode. The singlemode behavior has been demonstrated by a method based on optical low-coherence interferometry based on group-velocity dispersion. As suggested through a numerical approach, this outstanding characteristic/behavior is evidenced over a large spectral range spanning from 1 to 2 microns for a core diameter of 60 µm. Core scalability has also been investigated.
