Bifacial multicrystalline silicon thin film solar cells
in: Temporal Proceedings (2016)
Thanks to the fast development in recent years, over 12% efficiencies have been reached on multicrystalline silicon (mc-Si) thin film solar cells. These values are already close to those commercially available mc-Si wafer cells, with the absorber material just a fraction of the wafer ones. These mc-Si thin film solar cells are usually operating at mono facial mode including a reflector to harvest the long wavelength light. Bifacial mc-Si thin film cells can harvest not only the transmitted long wavelength light reflected back from the background, but also the scattered white light from the surrounding, therefore it will increase the effective use of absorber materials and the generated energy per unit area. It is expected that 20-30% extra energy can be produced at optimal conditions, and the overall effect is equivalent to solar cells with higher efficiencies (above 15%) working at a single facial mode. In addition, the semitransparent contacts are compatible for tandem solar cells, making them also very promising to reach much higher efficiencies.
