On November 12, 2014, the Philae lander will separate from the European space probe Rosetta, and land on the comet referred to as 67P/Tschurjumow-Gerassimenko (Tschuri for short); thermoelectric sensors from IPHT will be on board. Research has been performed for some time now on the implementation of semiconductor nanoparticles for biomedical applications. Nanoparticles are a millionth of a millimeter in size, which is small enough to penetrate a cell. When excited by ultrasound radiation, the particles found in the cell vibrate. For his research on the detection and identification of tumor cells circulating in bodily fluids without a microscope, Dr. Sebastian Dochow from IPHT was presented with the Scientific Community in Laser Technology (WLT) Award in the amount of 2000 euros today.
