As part of the Optical Diagnostics workshop held in Jena from July 3 to 4, 2015, medical doctors, scientists, and industrial representatives from all over Germany met to discuss how to transfer optical and photonic methods from research ideas to marketable products that can ultimately be used in clinics.

The 11th Jena Summer School program organized by the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) and the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena will take place from June 29 to July 3, 2015. The topic of this year’s event is “Biophotonics – Light for Health.”

The Journal of Biophotonics, which is published by the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT), reached an impact factor of 4,447 in 2014. Thus, it has achieved an international ranking among the top twelve science journals in the category of biophysics.

The Biophotonics research focus, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), is presenting its latest product developments in medical technology at the LASER. The Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) will be participating in the special exhibition “Hi Lights! What’s New in Light” (Hi Lights! Neues vom Licht) held at the Technical Collections of Dresden (Technische Sammlungen Dresden) museum from June 20, 2015, to June 19, 2016. IPHT will be presenting the lab-on-a-chip systems it is currently researching and developing.

Prof. Dr. Volker Deckert from the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) was named a fellow by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). Prof. Dr. Jürgen Popp, scientific director of IPHT and professor at the Institute of Physical Chemistry at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, received the Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award 2016 for his substantial contributions to the field of applied spectroscopy. Hydrogen is considered an important energy source of the future. One approach to the production of hydrogen is photocatalytic water splitting. Using light, water is divided into its components hydrogen and oxygen. Research scientists at IPHT have discovered that by exciting water with green light, electrons are transferred directly from the light-absorbing center to the site of splitting. The faster the electrons are transferred, the more efficiently light can be used for water splitting. [The PDF below contains the full German press release]

The international symposium “Molecular Plasmonics” will be held at IPHT from May 7-9, 2015. Around 60 research scientists from around the world will be discussing current research and developments in the area of nano-optics.
