The aim of the planned research and development project is to develop immunological detection systems for the gene products of the resistance genes mecA and mecC, which cause beta-lactam resistance in S. aureus/MRSA. In addition, the detection systems will include a marker for simultaneous identification of the bacterial species to exclude possible confusion with other mecA-positive but less problematic germs (Staphylococcus epidermidis, S. haemolyticus and others).
On the one hand, line/dot immunoassays for laboratory analysis as well as lateral flow assays (LFA) for rapid and cost-effective detection are developed with the following target parameters:
– Specific detection of mecA and mecC gene products.
– Specific detection of a species marker in the same assay
– Diagnostic specificity and sensitivity of ≥ 95 % to the reference method.
– Desirable: enzymatic instead of alkaline/thermal pretreatment, in order to be able to expand the test for the detection of further targets in the future
– Worldwide marketing and distribution – use also possible decentrally and in poorer countries
