Accurate measurement and control of temperature is a key requirement for a low-carbon energy system and thus for achieving the goals of the European Green Deal. Fibre-optic thermometry offers significant potential in this context: it enables distributed temperature measurements even in extreme environments and is immune to electromagnetic fields.

However, several challenges still limit its widespread use in the energy sector and industry. Fibre-optic thermometers are not only sensitive to temperature but also to other influencing factors such as strain, vibration or humidity. In addition, ageing effects can affect the reliability of the measurements.

The project therefore establishes a European metrological infrastructure to systematically investigate, quantify and minimise these limitations. The aim is to make fibre-optic thermometry traceable, reliable and suitable for practical applications.

To achieve this, the project addresses research, testing, calibration and knowledge transfer in equal measure. This includes work on measurement uncertainties, industrial case studies, calibration services and guidelines, as well as training activities for relevant stakeholder groups.
