The aim of QUANTIFISENS is to address complex sensing challenges through an integrated approach that combines optical fiber technology, advanced measurement techniques, and self-learning software. To achieve this, the project draws on principles from quantum technology and transfers them to high-performance sensor systems for demanding applications.

At the core of the project is the development of omnifunctional fiber sensor systems that can be flexibly adapted to different requirements. This approach aims to achieve performance characteristics and parameters that are not possible, or only possible to a limited extent, with existing solutions. QUANTIFISENS therefore follows an integrative concept in which components, modules, and software are conceived and developed together from the outset and precisely coordinated with one another.

The consortium brings together 13 partners: eleven technology companies—including small and medium-sized enterprises, start-ups, and large companies—and two research institutions, Fraunhofer IOF and Leibniz-IPHT. This collaboration combines scientific expertise with technological agility and industrial experience, creating a strong innovation base for the development of market-ready solutions.

Initially, the project focuses on two target markets: medical imaging and infrastructure monitoring. In both areas, optical fiber sensing technology offers significant advantages over established solutions or enables applications that have so far been difficult to address effectively. At the same time, both markets are highly relevant and show strong growth potential.

The collaboration within the consortium is structured around five thematic areas: optical fiber technology, scattering-based measurement techniques, quantum and laser technology, software and data analysis, and omnifunctional system integration. The interaction of these fields aims to produce sensor solutions that operate efficiently, with minimal data requirements and high precision.
