Development of an Innovative Laser Protective Textile
LumiSafe: Development of Novel Laser-Protective Textiles for the Optical Detection of Laser Radiation

The objective of the project is to develop an innovative coating for textile substrates intended for laser protection applications. By incorporating so-called upconversion particles, a novel laser-protective fabric will be created that not only fulfills established protective functions but additionally renders near-infrared (NIR) laser radiation visible to the human eye.
The aim is to enable cost-effective, large-area detection of not only direct NIR laser beam exposure, but also scattered NIR radiation and unintended or unexpected reflections. This approach is designed to significantly increase user hazard awareness and, consequently, improve risk prevention.
To achieve these goals, the project partners coordinate closely to develop suitable substrates and multifunctional coatings. These must meet diverse requirements, including flexibility, passive laser protection performance, optical and spectroscopic properties, durability, and manufacturability. The work encompasses spectroscopic characterization as well as the fabrication and finishing of end products such as protective curtains and, where applicable, garments.
