Passive fiber optic modules based on special optical fibers of various glass and crystal materials and geometries are the key components of numerous photonic systems. For the functionalization and investigation of the fiber-optic components of such modules we use high-resolution optical structuring methods (especially laser exposures), specially adapted assembly and interconnection techniques as well as numerous characterization methods. Research activities focus on the development and investigation of fiber optic modules for the life sciences and the further development of fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) for sensor technology. In addition, components from FBGs and FBG arrays for tunable fiber lasers are developed in close cooperation with other groups. Fiber optic modules for extreme application conditions (e.g. temperatures >1000°C) and in shape sensors as well as new structural concepts and evaluation units for miniaturized fiber sensor components are also being researched.

The application potential of passive fiber modules ranges from pressure catheters in medical technology, to position determination of catheters, filters for noise suppression in Raman sensors, monitoring of overhead railway lines, the realization of resonators in fiber lasers, to high-temperature diagnostics.
