In Thuringia and in particular in Jena, the scientific and industrial location is shaped by universities, research institutes and companies in the field of optics and photonics. While the number of young, well-trained female graduates is high, women who hold a leading position in academia and high-tech industry are still underrepresented.
The fiber optics research department is dedicated to issues regarding light guiding, light creation, and light control in optical fibers and for application as fiber optic light sources or fiber optic sensor components. The particular expertise of this research department lies in the modeling, creation, and application of guided light. The research department has comprehensive technological equipment at its disposal for the production of high-precision optical fibers, including special equipment for the modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) of differently doped glasses and in-house fiber drawing towers that are some of the most state-of-the-art research facilities in Europe. In addition, diverse technical options exist for the characterization, local structuring, and splicing of special optical fibers. Thus, IPHT is an attractive research partner for all issues concerning the production and application of state-of-the-art special optical fibers.
