Program Area Fiber Optics
Primary goals of the program area Fiber Optics are
- basic investigations for the efficient control of fiber-generated and fiber-guided light,
- research of fiber systems for a wide range of applications.
For this purpose, the material scientific and technological expertise for the manufacture of special optical fibers is combined in a wide parameter range with the scientific competencies for the characterization and application of fiber-optic components and systems. A strength of the institute is the coverage of the closed chain from material preparation, fiber preform development, fiber production, fiber functionalization, and fiber integration to fiber system application.
Research activities include the investigation of novel fiber concepts for life science or environmental issues, including disease diagnosis, advanced imaging in living organisms, and monitoring of pollution in gas- or liquid-containing environments.
