Master Thesis in the Competence Center for Micro- and Nanotechnologies
The Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology e.V. (Leibniz-IPHT) in Jena is a non-university research institution and is closely related to the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and a member of the Leibniz Association. The Competence Center for Micro- and Nanotechnologies at Leibniz-IPHT now offers the possibility for a

“Fabrication of a ternary NbxTi1-xN layer stacks for superconducting quantum circuits”
The international prominent research in the fields of quantum computing and quantum metrology requires ultra-thin layers and structures made of materials, which have superior electrical properties at cryogenic temperatures. Here, disordered superconductors like NbxTi1-xN niobium nitride (NbN) show unique phenomena, but the fabrication is quite challenging. The goal of this work is therefore the fabrication of NbxTi1-xN using PE-ALD and its investigation in regard to the superconducting properties.
Your Tasks:
- Fabrication of NbxTi1-xN layer stacks using PE-ALD
- Structuring of micro-bridges and simple electronic circuitries
- Determination of superconducting properties of NbxTi1-xN layers and micro-bridges at cryogenic temperatures
Your skills and expertise:
- Bachelor`s degree in physics/material sciences (FH/Uni) or equivalent
- Experimental skills and interest in working in cleanroom
- The ability to work creatively and independently towards developing your own research project
We offer:
- An interdisciplinary research within two groups/departments at Leibniz IPHT: Competence Center for Micro- and Nanotechnologies and Quantum Systems
- Payment on basis of student assistant
