The Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology e.V. is a non-profit research institute; its legal form is a registered association that is institutionally funded by the Free State of Thuringia. Members of this association include public and science institutes, commercial enterprises, and individuals from the business and science worlds.
The day-to-day business operations and the management of the research institute are tasks of the executive commitee.

The board of trustees decides on the appointment, the conditions of appointment, and the dismissal of the members of the association’s board. It decides on the general research goals and medium-term financial and investment plans of the association. The board of trustees monitors the legality, expediency, and cost effectiveness of the executives of the board of the institute. It decides on the guidelines for monitoring the success of scientific research of the institute and its research groups.
