Science is not about applying knowledge, it is all about expanding it. In IR spectroscopy the opposite has happened, the common knowledge has shrunk over the last decades. In molecular spectroscopy, the evaluation of spectra is today completely centered around the Beer-Lambert law, while IR spectra of inorganic materials cannot be successfully understood based on this approximation. My vision is the reunification of IR spectroscopy based on wave optics and dispersion theory.

Thomas Mayerhöfer obtained his diploma in chemistry in 1996 at the University of Regensburg and his PhD at the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena in 1999. In 2006 he finished his habilitation about "Optics and IR-Spectroscopy of Polydomain Materials" in Physical Chemistry. He is author and coauthor of more than 100 scientific papers, about half of which as first author.
