Volume Bragg gratings were inscribed in the non-photosensitive glass material S-TIH53 from OHARA using a fs laser system and a Talbot interferometer. We demonstrate the basic applicability of our technique for generating index modulations inside the volume of such user-adapted glass. The volume Bragg gratings are investigated by measuring the external Bragg reflection using a HeNe laser (632.8 nm). Thus the local reflectivity profile is mapped and the modulation of the refractive index can be estimated. Other kinds of gratings, such as surface or amplitude gratings were ruled out by investigations with an optical microscope, heating experiments and absorption measurements.
