Raman spectroscopy has been proven to be a powerful bio-diagnostically tool. With this technique several biomedical questions were addressed, e.g. tumor detection, cell differentiation, the in-vivo arteriosclerotic plaque composition determination and many others more. Since the 1990ies researchers around the world developed a tremendous amount of different probe configurations; each with advantages and disadvantages which will get addressed within this manuscript. A brief application note for the different configurations is given and the future development toward monolithic and fully integrated probes will be discussed.
