Resonant plasmonic structures represent a highly promising platform for studying novel physical effects on the nanoscale and for high precision biosensing on molecular scales. Here we have studied the impact of surface lattice resonances on the spectral behavior of densely packed square arrays of nanodisk trimers both from the simulations as well as from the experimental per-spectives where we have observed the emergence of modes that solely arise due to the presence of neighboring trimers. We discuss all relevant fea-tures of the trimer arrays geometry, including polarization, diameter and pitch dependences. In addition to a very distinct polarization dependence not present in case of isolated trimers, we found that very small inter-trimer distances lead to the emergence of two distinct modes. Beside the surface lattice resonance mediated mode, a Fano-type mode and a mode with a loop-like polarization pattern are found. Refractive index sensing experiments show a strong sensitivity of 510 nm/RIU, suggesting promising applications of the trimer array within fields such as bioanalytics.
